CARTMEL VALLEY BASEBALL CLUB |

Thanks to everyone who helped with the Duckrace. We raised £551
Due
to popular demand we plan to start a new adult
team for 2012 to retain some of our young
players once they leave our Pony team, attract
back some of our previous players, and to open
membership to adults and the wider community. It
is hoped that this will increase local community
interest in the club and attract new volunteers
to work with the Junior players. We submitted a bid to Sport
England Small Grant Programme for funding for
new uniform, equipment and training to support
our new team as well as a new batting cage. We
have been awarded £5668 in support of our new
Adult team and a new 70 ft batting cage!
Ex-Cartmel player Ben Pearson will
be pitching for the new Cartmel senior team in
2012 after a season with Hamburg Stealers in the
German league and training with the Durham
College team in Ontario, Canada in September
Rookie Training
- Thursdays 6 - 7 pm in Cartmel Priory School Hall
Congratulations to Chantelle for
winning Young Baseball Volunteer of the Year

"James has devoted the last four years to his own coaching development and became the youngest qualified Level 3 Coach in the UK in 2009. He was an Assistant Coach for the GB Cadet teams in 2010 and 2011, specialising in catching, and was invited to Canada to experience college coaching as part of the MLB Envoy Scheme.James has sacrificed a lot of his own playing time to coach club, Academy and National Team players. When not coaching, he has often been active behind the scenes, fundraising or just helping out -- preparing the field at home, visiting schools or helping at MLB Roadshows and the 2011 National Baseball Championships"

NatWest Community Force
A big thank you to everyone who
voted for our bid to win a £6000 grant from this
programme. We had a lot of support from baseball
friends around the country but unfortunately we were
unable to compete against some of the large charities
and urban projects in our region and finished out of the
money placings.
Bag Packing at ASDA - Friday 8th July
Many thanks to everyone who helped with this and raised over £300.
Another great Frank
Caunce Tournament for Cartmel Valley Teams
All
three age groups from Cartmel Valley travelled to Menwith Hill
for the second Frank Caunce Tournament to be held at the
American base. The forecast rain never materialised so it was in
cool but dry conditions that the teams took to the field with
all the NorthWest clubs represented.
After a warm welcome from the hosts
and the group photograph the Pony team took on the hosts
Menwith Hill for the first game which proved to be a very one
sided affair. It is a credit to Menwith that they fielded a team
for the tournament as many of their players were inexperienced
or hadn’t played since they were Rookies. Cartmel had only 7
players so were joined by 2 enthusiastic Manchester players for
our games.
Ryan pitched a no hitter for a 19 – 0
score over 4 innings taking us into the Final game with Halton,
who beat Manchester in their semi final game.
The Broncos drew Menwith Hill
for their first game – taking advantage of the opportunity to
hit out and maintain their unbeaten record this season with a
comfortable win 14 - 1 through to the next round.
Special mentions - Murray for batting , Hamish for two
catches and Cameron for pitching.
The second Bronco game was against
Halton where our team was almost undone by one talented player
who out pitched, out ran and out thought our team. After the
initial shock, Cartmel fought back with gusto and narrowly beat
Halton 6-4. Special performance - Oliver for batting &
catching, and some fine batting from Coby & Ross B.
Meanwhile our little band of 7
Rookies enjoyed a friendly game with their hosts from the
base, with the chance to hit coach pitched balls and get some
instruction along the way.
The Finals: It
was the same match up as last year for both the Pony and Bronco
teams!
Cartmel Bronco v. Northwich
The final was a highly charged game
against Northwich with Cartmel producing a fine team effort
and sporting performances from all. We held down the opposition
with strong pitching and fielding. The final result a 4 –
0 victory. A Special performance from all the team but Johnny’s
pitching was fantastic. And a special mention to Ross D for
catching for 9 innings.
Cartmel Pony v. Halton
After losing the toss it was
essential for Cartmel to get a good start in their final -
Cartmel got runners on base and capitalised on some fielding
errors by the normally tight Halton fielders to go 4 runs ahead
in the first inning. From then on it was a nervous game with
Halton desperately trying to come back with their experienced
pitcher Harry striking out several Cartmel batters and Tom
pitching for Cartmel.
Two runs for Cartmel in the 3rd
were matched by 2 from Halton. After 2 more runs from Halton in
the bottom of the final inning Ryan came back to the mound to
save the game, Cartmel winning 6 - 4. A jubilant Cartmel team
held onto the Pony trophy for the 5th year in
succession!
Another great Frank Caunce Tournament
hosted by the Menwith Hill crew with their excellent
facilities provided another great day out for all the N W clubs!
First Matches and BBQ
Thanks to everyone who helped, particularly Jonathon, Bruce, Alison and Ben for doing a fantastic job preparing the two diamonds. Also thank you to the BBQ Team, Karin, Mark J, Jackie, Mark R, Stuart, Louise, Dee and Heather, not only did they help but also generously donated items to the BBQ. I am also very aware of everyone else who donated salads, Sauces, cakes, squash etc to ensure we had enough for all. £175 was raised which will be split between the Club and the new Bursary Fund.

We were able to raise £1000

Goodbye to our Club President
Our Club President - Sam Naylor left us in August as he moved with his wife Edwina to a new home in Cheshire. We wish him a successful move and thank him for his support of our club and young people in recent years. In a message he said how proud he was to be associated with our club and with the achievements of all those involved. Our best wishes go with him.
